Texas Hold'em hand rankings

Texas Hold'em uses exactly the same order. You get two private cards, five shared cards are dealt to the board, and you play the best five of those seven. You can use both, one or none of your own cards. New to the game? Start with the poker cheat sheet.

FAQ

What is the best hand in poker?

A royal flush: A, K, Q, J and 10 of the same suit. It is the highest straight flush and cannot be beaten, only tied.

Does a flush beat a straight?

Yes. A flush ranks above a straight because it is harder to make. In five-card poker there are 5,108 flushes and 10,200 straights.

Does a full house beat a flush?

Yes. A full house (three of a kind plus a pair) beats any flush.

Is an ace high or low in poker?

Both, in a straight. A-K-Q-J-10 is the highest straight and 5-4-3-2-A (the wheel) is the lowest. An ace cannot wrap around, so Q-K-A-2-3 is not a straight.

Do suits matter in poker?

No. In standard poker all suits are equal. If two hands are otherwise identical the pot is split.

What happens if two players have the same hand?

Compare the highest cards that differ, called kickers. For example A-A-K beats A-A-Q. If all five cards match in rank, the pot is split.

Are Texas Hold'em hand rankings the same?

Yes. Texas Hold'em, Omaha and five-card draw all use the same hand rankings. In Hold'em you make the best five-card hand from your two cards and the five community cards.
